It’s no Logitech, Razer or Microsoft-class gaming mouse in terms of gaming hardware brands, but it does offer something that none of those guys ever thought of. It packs a wireless gamepad under it. By itself, the Chameleon X-1 by Shogun Bros should be a decent pointer. It’s a 7-button mouse for gamers who specifically look for the standard three, a 5-stage adjustable optical (read: not laser) sensor that tops out at 1600dpi, and connects to a PC via a 2.4GHz wireless USB dongle. But the underside is where it’s at, since that’s what sets this thing apart.
Anyway, if you’re looking for a fairly bulky gamepad with a curved mouse-shaped backside, here’s what you get: a 14-button PlayStation-type gamepad—complete with 2 analog “sticks,” plus force feedback—that you can use for those console-worthy games on your PC. As a bonus, the X-1 can also be used as a wireless remote and presenter, in case you’re a hardcore gamer who needs a wireless mouse that also doubles as a presentation tool.
No one knows how good the total package works though, since it’s scheduled for a release in early 2011. We’re pretty sure the mouse and remote part works fine, although a mouse-shaped gamepad might feel a bit awkward. It’s listed to cost $55 when it gets released, so at least it wouldn’t hurt to try.
